Seven puppies are dead after traveling aboard an American Airlines plane flying from Tulsa, Oklahoma to Chicago O’Hare International Airport Tuesday Aug 3rd, prompting an investigation by the air carrier.
American Airlines has reported that necropsies had been performed on the dogs, but the results were inconclusive. A brief summary of their response: heat may have been involved; the dogs’ health “may have been compromised” before American took possession of them; the deaths are tragic.

Even though Pennsylvania signed a strict dog law for governing commercial kennels in 2008, the ultimate success of the bill is threatened because of a provision that allows puppies to be housed in wired cage/floored kennels for up to 12 weeks. This means that nursing mother could spend up to 6 months a year in wire cages.

An interesting statistics outlined in the article “The number of commercial kennels, defined as those selling or transferring more than 60 dogs or selling any dogs to pet stores, has fallen from 300 to just over 100 since the law took effect in 2009.”

An interesting study was recently completed by the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at Indiana University South Bend. The study linked a person’s location (rural vs. suburban vs. urban) to how they viewed and treated their pets. They found that people who think of animals as children tend to have a city/urban background.

I read an very intriguing blog post today comparing the cost of owning a dog verses a cat.
Obviously we all have a preference on which species we choose to share our lives with, but if money is a factor in your selection of a pet, the cat seems to be the smarter choice.
