The Dachshund is also otherwise known as a sausage dog
due to its long body. There are three types of coat available in the Dachshund breed:
smooth coats, wirehaired coats and longhaired coats. All are acceptable within the
show ring. The Dachshund also comes in two size varieties, Miniature Dachshund and Standard Dachshund. Color wise there are a variety of different colors available which include
solid colors, two colors and pattern colors. The solid colors are generally red or cream
and the two colors are generally black and tan, chocolate and tan, black and cream or
blue and tan. If a Dachshund is a solid black or a solid chocolate brown color, they are
automatically disqualified. On a side note, most dog breeds refer to a coat that has a single color with spots as a “merle”, but in Dachshunds this color pattern is known as “dapple”.
Their purpose was to hunt and go down narrow tunnels after badgers and sometimes they
were used to hunt game. However, over time they have now become more of a family
companion pet.
The Dachshund is a loyal and friendly dog who loves nothing
more than to play and chase small animals and birds. They are a clever breed and they
can be extremely courageous despite their size. They often have a fairly comical stature
and they do not seem to care about much around them.
Their temperament does tend to alter depending on which coat type they have.
Longhaired dogs for example, tend to be less excitable than the other two types. They can
be fairly headstrong and so they are not overly easy to train. This means that they need an
owner who can be strict and firm with them at all times.
They travel easily and can bark quite loud despite their small size. Although
they can be good with other pets, they are prone to becoming jealous and irritable and
they often snap with very little warning. The breed is also prone to putting on weight
quickly so they should not be overfed.
This breed was originally developed in Germany hundreds of years
ago. ‘Dachs’ is the German word for Badger and the Dachshunds original purpose was to
hunt badgers, hence the name. They were evolved so that they had little legs that would
allow them to burrow into the ground and fit into tight holes.
The original Dachshunds were bigger than the ones we see today which is why they were
evolved into smaller animals in order to hunt. As well as badger hunting, Dachshunds
were also regularly used for fox and rabbit hunting.
